The entrance ceremony for Future Global Leadership (FGL) undergraduate students was held on Thursday, September 29.

The ceremony was held in-person (and online) for the first time in three years since the COVID-19 pandemic began. FGL welcomed a total of 28 students from 12 countries including Executive Vice President Takizawa and Vice President Yamaguchi attended the ceremony to welcome the new students.

Executive Director Takizawa, in his welcome speech, encouraged the new FGL students, saying: "In particular, our generation consists of a diversity of values, and numerous problems. These facts are reflected in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Solving these problems requires a broad foundation of knowledge, spanning the sciences and humanities. This is cultivated not by merely specializing in one's field, but by interacting with students gathered from around the world and learning together in a way that transcends academic boundaries. Our greatest wish is that the four years you spend here will be enriching.“

Three students gave speeches on behalf of the new students. The representative from the AMC course, Faculty of Science said: “I hope that I can learn more about chemistry in Tohoku University, while enjoying my time here and developing my own chemistry with brilliant people and this city.” A representative of the IMAC-U course, School of Engineering, in a speech for his future student life, said: “At Tohoku university we can stay curious, be ambitious and bring the dream to reality. As for me, I personally chose this university because I’m interested in aerospace. Entering university might be a great time to foster my curiosity.” The representative from the AMB course, Faculty of Agriculture said: “I would like to learn marine biology in Tohoku University, how I can use these skills in my home country.”

After the ceremony, a group photo was taken, and the new students looked forward to their university life in the refreshing autumn weather.

This time, 14 students from the National University of Singapore participated in the program, which was specially arranged for them despite the COVID-19 pandemic. In the final presentation, held on August 8, the students reflected on the four weeks they spent at Tohoku University and gave presentations in Japanese on their experiences in the program, including what they learned in Japanese language classes and Japanese culture experience workshops, and their interactions with Tohoku University students. Through this program, TUJP students improved their Japanese language skills and deepened their understanding of Japan and Tohoku University.

The Tohoku University Global Learning Center (GLC) is implementing a short-term student exchange program, the "Tohoku University Japanese Program (TUJP)," during the summer of academic year 2022. First, a two-week online program was held from June 20 to July 1 for students with beginner-level Japanese language skills. A total of 11 participants from universities in the U.S., China, Singapore, the Netherlands, and Germany took part in the program. Participants deepened their understanding of Japan through lectures on Japanese culture, problem-solving classes with Tohoku University students, and extracurricular exchanges, in addition to Japanese language study with an emphasis on improving communication skills.

In addition, from July 12 to August 8, we are conducting TUJP in person for the first time in three years. This year's program is being conducted as a special program, and 14 students from the National University of Singapore are participating. As part of the festival-themed program, participating students made decorations for Tanabata (a traditional Sendai cultural event) and experienced the Suzume-odori (sparrow-dance). Participating students also visited club activities at Tohoku University and interacted with Tohoku University student "buddies." We will continue to implement the program while taking rigorous infection control measures.

Photos 1-3: The 1st Japanese classes on July 4

Future Global Leadership (FGL) undergraduate courses provide online "FGL Pre-Enrollment Education" for new FGL students who are scheduled to enroll in October. From 2021, the program has been implemented as an official course (Study Abroad Program-Basic A) for which credits are awarded after enrollment.

This year, on June 20, we held an orientation for the 31 students from 13 countries who will enroll in October, as well as for faculty members and TAs who are currently enrolled in the FGL undergraduate courses and science and engineering Japanese programs. In principle, the course is held twice a week for 8 weeks until the first week of September. STEM classes (mathematics, physics, and chemistry) are designed with the high school-university connection in mind for those who will enter the program after completing various educational programs around the world. In addition to these STEM classes, students will learn the Japanese language necessary for daily life and will be introduced to the Japanese lifestyle and culture, Tohoku University, and student life.

In a post-enrollment survey, this course has been well received by students as a unique initiative of the Tohoku University International Program, and a good cycle has been created in which previous participants are involved in the training as TAs to support prospective students every year.

“Online Talk Show: Let’s Study at Tohoku University” by Tohoku University Indonesian Alumni Association

    photo 1

On May 28, 2022, "Online Talk Show: Let's Study at Tohoku University" was held by "Tohoku University Alumni Association in Indonesia" with more than 130 participants, mainly high school and university students living in Indonesia.

This information session was planned and held as part of the Tohoku University's 115th anniversary commemorative project. It was made possible through the efforts of many Indonesian alumni, including Alumni Association President Dr. Sri Harajanto, who was involved in the organization of the event.

At the event, after a video message from President Ohno, Yumiko Watanabe, GLC Professor and Coordinator of the International Degree Program (Future Global Leadership), gave a presentation on study abroad opportunities at the University, focusing on undergraduate and graduate FGL courses. The presentation was followed by "Scholarship Information" by the Consulate of Surabaya and current Tohoku University Indonesian students, and "Introduction to Careers after Study Abroad" by alumni.

The event was a great success, exceeding the scheduled time by more than 30 minutes. Currently, Tohoku University's Indonesian community of 120 students is the second largest on campus and the largest among Japanese universities. We realized that it is made possible by the strong support of our alumni living abroad.

The "Sakura Science Exchange Program Online University Visit" hosted by JST was held on Saturday, May 21 at Tohoku University

    photo2

On Saturday, May 21, the "Sakura Science Exchange Program Online University Visit" hosted by JST was held at Tohoku University. The number of pre-registrations reached an amazing 2,155 people, while the live event exceeded expectations with an even higher number of participants from all over the world at 2,166.

The online virtual visit took the form of a two-hour promotional event tailored towards international students who are interested in attending Tohoku university in pursuit of a degree.

Following the overview of Tohoku University and the “Virtual Campus Tour: Campus Insider Sneak-peek” presented by two FGL students, the well-known space engineering professor, Kazuya Yoshida gave a special lecture entitled "Robotics for Space Missions: From the Earth to the Moon and Asteroids". This 30-minute lecture was very exciting and rich in content that covered the history of space exploration and the development of space exploration robotics. The audience was inspired and asked many questions about his lecture and general topics on space exploration.

In the “Panel Discussion: What is life like in Sendai?”, four FGL international students shared their experience and life at Tohoku University. We believe it gave the audience overseas a concrete image about life in Tohoku University as well as in Sendai.

In the Q&A Session at the end of the event, Prof. Yoshida, the program coordinator and other presenters answered various questions from the audience. Prospective student engagement was high, with many more questions asked than could be answered in the given time.

This event allowed us to introduce more details about our university and programs and we believe that the audience could visualize their life in Tohoku University. We are looking forward to seeing the audience in Tohoku University in the future.

The cherry blossoms are in full bloom under the very beautiful weather in Sendai now.

In the FGL Undergraduate Program, 20 of the students who have been taking online classes in their home countries have arrived in Sendai to coincide with the arrival of the cherry-blossom season.

Classes at Tohoku University's Kawauchi Campus began on April 11, and for the six students who have not yet arrived in Sendai, classes are being held in a high-flex format. The students, who were attending classes face-to-face in a classroom for the first time, seemed nervous at first, but gradually enjoyed the direct interaction with their peers and faculty members and participated in the classes. Hoping that the day when all students take classes in the classroom will come soon, the faculty and staff will continue to support the students to make this semester a meaningful one for them.
