Activity Report from Tohoku University Center, University of California, Riverside, U.S.A
20 Tohoku students participated in a Multiculturalism program at the UCR Extension Center from August 12 to August 30th. Besides learning about the variety of diverse cultures found in the US, they had opportunities to interact with other UCR students and learned exhaustively and comprehensively about all the coalescent traditions and norms built into the base of the culture itself. Tohoku University also invited UCR alumni who had studied on the TU campus, and they talked about how wonderful and unforgettable their study abroad experience was! This summer, a total of four UCR students participated in TSSP and TUJP, returning home with great academic and cultural experiences from Tohoku University! We hope all SAP participants had a great experience at UCR as well!

FGL Program Promotion in Indonesia
Session of Internet-mediated "Introduction to the FGL Program and Q&A"
Tohoku University booth at SMA Kristen 1 Penabur High School's Study Fair
Seminars explaining the Future Global Leadership Undergraduate Courses (FGL Program) were conducted at four high schools and one organization in Indonesia from September 22 to 28, 2019.
The program's first ever Internet-mediated "Introduction to the FGL Program and Q&A" was conducted in Jakarta and the Central Java city of Semarang. The attendees of two sessions were 30 families and 20 students, respectively. It was a very good method of explaining the program directly to the students' parents/guardians.
In Jakarta, in-person visitations were made to Indonesia's 1st and 3rd highest ranked high schools. Interest in studying abroad and the FGL Program was very high at both schools. There were 60 attendees at the top-ranked high school, and the seminar lasted some two hours. The other school held a Study Fair where Tohoku University had a booth, which nearly 300 people visited, including parents/guardians. At both activities, the video that we made to explain the FGL Program overall was extremely effective.

Vietnamese High School Students Visit Tohoku University
High school students, who won the first prize in the video competition ‘FGL Challenge in Vietnam’ last February, visited Tohoku University from July 29 to August 3.
The students were introduced to laboratories associated with 3 undergraduate English courses of the FGL: Future Global Leadership program at Tohoku University. They got first-hand experience of novel and cutting-edge research on ‘Advanced Molecular Chemistry’, ‘Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering’ and ‘Applied Marine Biology’.
The students also enjoyed the ‘Tohoku University Open Campus’ along with Japanese high-school students during their first two days. This introduced them to the wide-ranging fields of study conducted at the university.
During the last leg of their trip, they firstly visited the Sendai city waste treatment facility to understand the sophisticated process of waste management here in Japan. Waste management is related closely to the theme of their competition video.
Then the students paid a visit to the Arahama elementary school and also visited the Yuriage Factory to learn about novel techniques for growing seaweed. Both facilities were located at the forefront of the area affected during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.
The students had a great learning experience and provided positive feedback about their trip. They shall return with a lifetime's worth of learning, memories and fresh perspectives.
