Six students, selected for embodying the spirit of Tohoku University's internationalisation efforts, have been awarded the Global Hagi Scholarship for winter 2017.

On December 14 (Thu.) 2017, a seminar titled "Renting Apartments for Beginners" was held at the International Exchange Building on Kawauchi Kita Campus. The seminar was aimed at international students who will be leaving their dormitories and renting apartments in Sendai for the first time. It was conducted in English and covered how to look for apartments and things to be careful of when signing the lease.

The seminar was held with cooperation from the Tohoku University Co-op housing staff. About 41 international students participated in the seminar and Q&A session.

Many of the international students were renting apartments in Japan for the first time. They listened closely to the presenters and actively asked questions about the rental process, from finding an apartment to signing the lease.

The International Exchange Support Office plans to hold similar seminars in the future. Those who missed the seminar can find the relevant materials on the TU Support website.

Students study English, including the dialect of the American south, and use their English practically in culture classes as well as on the field trips relating to classes. Students study not only about southern Americans, but also about African- and Native-Americans, and we take field trips to related areas, such as a historic former slave plantation and a Native American reservation and museum.
We also visit other museums and the heart of the city of Charlotte. Students also have a chance to experience general American culture through a number of activities such as attending an American football game, going to restaurants and a number of cultural exchange events with UNCC students and people in Charlotte. A simple project is also assigned to students so that they can learn both in and outside the classroom, and free-time is given to students to use on campus so that they can gather data for their project.

The Humans of Minamisanriku project was conducted in the town of Minamisanriku as a collaboration between Tohoku University TGL students and students from Baylor University (USA), which one of Tohoku University's partner schools, who visited in July.
Inspired by "Humans of New York," the "Humans of..." project showcases fascinating individuals from various countries and regions around the globe. Following that project's pattern, the students set out to introduce the beautiful town of Minamisanriku, and its wonderful residents, to the world. They interviewed four people from Minamisanriku about the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the reconstruction efforts, the future of the town, and its attractions. They then compiled the interviews into a powerful video.

Fourteen Tohoku University students have just returned from a two-week study abroad program in Canada. Led by Associate Professor Martin Robert from the Institute for Excellence in Higher Education and the Global Learning Center, the diverse group was composed of undergraduates from the Departments of Agriculture, Dentistry, Economics, Engineering, Law and Science.
Known as the Canadian Heritage and Nature Group Experience, CHaNGE is one of the new Faculty-led (FL) Study Abroad Programs introduced at Tohoku University this year. From September 9 - 24, students visited leading institutions and partner universities in Montreal and Ottawa. Through daily seminars and field trips, they learnt about, among other topics, issues important to Canada such as cultural diversity and the environment.

Tohoku University welcomed 28 new international undergraduates to the Future Global Leadership (FGL) programme at the 2017 Fall Entrance Ceremony last week.

The students come from 10 different countries including Indonesia, China, Thailand and the Philippines. For the first time, two Japanese students who passed the Global Admissions Exam, will also be taking classes with the FGL students.

Four Chinese students have been conferred the Tohoku University Professor Fujino Incentive Award for 2017. They received their certificates from university president Susumu Satomi at a ceremony on September 26. The Tohoku University Professor Fujino Incentive Award reflects the strong friendship and trust between China and Japan, and is given out each year to students who best embody that spirit.

The arrival of spring marks the start of the "matsuri" or festival season in Japan. Here in Sendai, there is none bigger or more anticipated than the Aoba Matsuri, a weekend of traditional dancing and street festivities along Jozenjidori. The highlight of the annual festival is the Suzume Odori or 'sparrow dance,' which dates back to the building of Sendai castle in 1603, when stone masons danced like sparrows to entertain feast-goers and their samurai lord, Masamune Date. Tohoku University's team consisted of some 42 students, almost all of them from the International Program for Liberal Arts (IPLA). The Aoba Matsuri is held every May in Sendai, and attracts about a million people from all over Japan.

Summer marks the much anticipated return of the Tohoku University Japanese Program (TUJP) where students from partner universities spend a fortnight in Sendai attending intensive language classes and seminars about Japanese history, law and economy.There are also hands-on workshops on traditional arts and culture.
This year's TUJP participants came from 13 countries as diverse as Russia, Germany, Indonesia, China and the United States.
The Global Learning Center, which runs TUJP, hopes that students who come for the summer will be inspired to come back on a longer, more substantial exchange programme. To find out about some of the other programmes available, visit the link below.

Twenty Tohoku University students who are deemed to best reflect the university's internationalization efforts, were conferred awards this week by President Susumu Satomi. The ceremony was held at Katahira campus.

Fourteen students received the prestigious Global Hagi Scholarship, which will go towards study abroad programmes at Tohoku University's partner institutions around the world. Six students received the Tohoku University Global Leader certification after collecting sufficient points from classes and activities that encourage a global mindset.

The Tohoku University International Students Reception for the academic year of 2016 was held on Friday, March 3, 2017 in the Ballroom of the Westin Sendai. This reception is held around this time every year. The international students who entered Tohoku University and those who will graduate this year were invited, along with staff from international student support organizations and faculty and staff of Tohoku University, to facilitate the building of friendships and international exchange.
