2024年12月13日（金）〜15日（日）の3日間にわたり、Pioneering Ideas: From Graduate Research to Societal Changeと題した分野横断型リサーチ・キャンプを主催しました。東北大学、関西大学、千葉大学が共同で推進する教育および人材育成のイニシアティブ、JIGE（Japan hub for Innovative Global Education）プロジェクトの一環として企画・運営され、各学問分野における最新の知見の共有、横断的な視点での研究シーズの開発や共同研究の促進を目指す取り組みです。10-11月のJIGE 2024 ドクトラル･コロキウムは、地球科学系と人文社会系に分かれて実施されましたが、今回の分野横断型リサーチ・キャンプでは、その冠に掲げる通り、それぞれ異なる学問を専攻する大学院生が集い、文理を融合させた学際的な観点で学び合いました。連携3大学から計13名が参加しました。コーディネーター・総合ファシリテーターは、東北大学グローバルラーニングセンターの湊洵菜助手が務めました。

キャンプに先駆け、大学での学修と社会との接続というテーマに対する議論のレディネスを高め、参加者間のネットワーキングを図ることを目的に、オンライン事前セッションを実施しました。ノースカロライナ大学シャーロット校 Department of Languages, Cultures and Translationのエニカ・バナージ氏が登壇し、グローバルな舞台での活躍を見据えて身につけるべき異文化理解のための知識やスキル、その研鑽機会に関する話題提供・学生との意見交換を行いました。同大学のビジネスサーティフィケートを取得し、日系企業に就職した卒業生の経験談を聞く時間もあり、学生たちは自身の行動計画の具体化に向けたモチベーションを得たようでした。

キャンプでは、他者と効果的に協働するスキルの涵養や、複数の学問の連携・融合による研究の新発展、また、キャリアビジョンの探索などに向け、以下の活動に取り組みました。

    • 今回参加した大学院生たちにとって、所属大学や研究分野、国籍などの垣根を越えて学術研究と実社会とのつながりを議論する機会は貴重だったようで、イベント後には熱のこもったコメントが多く届きました。東北大学では、引き続き、JIGEの枠組みにおいて多様なリサーチ・キャンプを開催し、次世代を担う大学院生たちの相互研鑽を促進してまいります。

  • This camp has significantly broadened my perspective on cross-disciplinary research and its potential for societal impact. Before joining to the camp, I had usually focused on my research in isolation, working alone in my lab. However, this experience has inspired me to step out of my comfort zone, connect with people from various fields, and gain new insights through meaningful interactions. I now feel a strong desire to actively explore the broader world, seeking inspiration and collaboration that can enrich both my personal growth and my academic endeavors. Also, the discussions and workshops inspired me to pursue opportunities that align my academic interests with addressing pressing social issues, reinforcing my passion for interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Special Lecture & Discussion with Dr. Banerjee and Dr. Blum provided the clearest answers and real examples about how we, as foreigners, can leverage our PhD degrees in the Japanese business world — whether by joining a company or starting our own.
  • The JIGE 2024 Camp inspired me to apply research to real-world challenges, explore interdisciplinary collaboration, and consider entrepreneurial paths. It emphasized practical impact, career growth, and key skills like adaptability and innovation, making it a transformative experience.
  • I think every backgrounds have similarities at some points, and it's the best to find the similarities and learn how to apply it to our own research. Not to take people's idea, but sometimes we are stuck at one POV because we are so used to see the problem from our own field's view, but maybe we can learn how people see the problem and solve it in their own way, reflect it, and adapt it in our capabilities.
  • The most valuable thing I learned during the camp was the importance of collaboration, effective communication, and the ability to convey my ideas clearly to others. Working with diverse individuals in various types of team activities & sessions not only allowed me to understand different perspectives, but also taught me how to integrate them to achieve a common goal. Through these experiences, I developed the skill to present my ideas in a way that resonated with others, ensuring our team could work efficiently and cohesively.
