National Health Insurance(国民健康保険)

Take your National Health Insurance Card with you when going to see your doctor. By presenting your card, your medical costs at the hospital will be reduced 70% under the National Health Insurance Program.

●What if you are hospitalized or have to undergo surgery?(入院・手術)

You can reduce the amount that you must pay at the hospital, by presenting a "Maximum Payable Amount Certificate(高額療養費制度)".

If you expect to be charged high medical treatment fees, take your health insurance card, residence card and Social Security and Tax Number ("My Number") to the Health Insurance and Pension Division of Aoba Ward Office (Window #53, 5th floor) to apply for the Maximum Payable Amount Certificate prior to hospitalization or surgery.

If you are hospitalized before you have a chance to obtain the certificate, you must pay the whole amount of your medical fees at the hospital. After being discharged from the hospital, go to the Aoba Ward Office to apply for the certificate, then return to the hospital reception desk and present it. The amount you overpaid will be transferred into your bank account a few months later.

Social Security Number "My Number"

Once you officially become a resident in Japan, a Social Security & Tax Number, also called "My Number" will be issued by the Japanese government. This 12-digit "My Number" is required on various occasions such as when opening your bank account, applying to extend your visa, etc.
A notification with your "My Number" on it will be sent to your address by registered mail. If you are not at home when it is delivered, your card will be held at your local post office for a limited time only. Please follow the instructions on the undeliverable mail notice to arrange for redelivery before the deadline expires. Make sure you go to your bank to notify them your My Number after you receive it.

National Pension - Special Payment System for Students - * Applicable to students who have already turned 20

All registered residents of Japan aged 20 to 59 years must join the National Pension System, and pay a premium every month. But as a student, you can apply to defer payment through the Special Payment System for Students. You won't need to pay premiums if you apply for this system. Note that you need to reapply every April to continue using this system. The procedures go as follows.

Upon turning 20 yrs old STEP 1 : You will be mailed your Notice of Basic Pension Number by the Japan Pension Service.
STEP 2 : Go to the FGL Office with your Notice of Basic Pension Number and student ID card.
STEP 3 : Sign the documents for the deferment, the Special Payment System for Students, at the FGL Office.
STEP 4 : Your application form will be accepted in a few months. Keep the Notice of Basic Pension Number in a safe place.

* Although Japan Pension Service might mail you bills for pension premiums after signing the documents to defer payments (STEP 3), you don't need to pay the bills because you've submitted the necessary documents for the deferment.
From the next April onwards STEP 1 : Go to Student Life Support Section, Counter #3, 1st floor, Education and Student Support Center with your Pension ID Number indicated on your pension book and student ID card.
STEP 2 : Fill out an application form for the Special Payment System for Students.
STEP 3 : Repeat this application every April.
