Tohoku University has been selected as the first venue in Japan to host the Social Innovators Hub (SIH), a new co-creation incubation program established by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

What is SIH? ~Program purpose~

This program has been established as a social incubation program to connect the wisdom and ideas of developing countries and Japan. The aim is to nurture "next-generation social innovators" who aspire to solve social issues in their countries through business, with students from Japan and partner countries learning together.
The themes of this year's program are the environmental sector (circular economy, carbon neutral, and nature positive) and the disaster prevention sector. We expect that Tohoku University undergraduate and graduate students, as well as individuals from partner countries who are interested in addressing social issues in these fields and are eager to take action to solve them, will collaborate to co-create, contribute solutions, and engage in business planning while receiving expert guidance and advice. Moreover, by establishing a global network, we also aim to facilitate ongoing implementation and development of ideas.

Key points of the program

Thoughts on the establishment of SIH

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has been providing international cooperation to partner countries for the past 70 years.
During this time, the world economy has grown significantly, and people living standards have increased.
On the other hand, despite economic growth, a large proportion of the world's population still suffer from various social problems such as discrimination, poverty, lack of education, and health care. The consumption of resources leads to the depletion of natural capital, and the effects of climate change caused by industrial activities pose a threat to people’s livelihoods. Therefore, we believe that we need a place for co-creation where individuals with a desire to learn, connect, and effect change to create a better future for people are essential. From an innovative perspective, we aim to capture values that cannot be “measured” through traditional methods. We are looking forward to receiving applications from people of diverse backgrounds with a passion to make a real difference in the world.
Change your mind, Innovate the future.
