The "Tohoku University Japanese Program (TUJP) Online-1" was held from December 1 to 14, 2020.

The theme of "TUJP Online" is "Discover "Real" Japan from Home" and TUJP Online-1 consisted of Japanese language classes on the theme of virtual study abroad, specialized subject classes, problem-solving classes, Japanese culture classes, and exchange events with Tohoku University students.

In addition to 24 students from Singapore, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Taiwan, 50 Tohoku University students participated in the program as volunteers, serving as buddies for the participants, assisting with conversation practice in Japanese classes, and helping with problem-solving classes.

On the last day of the program, each participant gave a presentation in Japanese on the topic that interested them the most during the TUJP period and explained the reasons for their interest, linking it to their future plans for studying Japanese and studying abroad. Many of the participants expressed their desire to study at Tohoku University.

Professor Kazuko Suematsu (Special Advisor for international affairs, Vice Director of Global Learning Center) who handed out the Certificate of Completion said "The memorable first online Tohoku University Japanese Program (TUJP Online-1) has been successfully completed. We were able to accept excellent students from Tohoku University's partner universities and virtually develop the same high-quality education and exchange activities as in person. We will also make every effort to promote the appeal of Japan and Japanese language learning to people all over the world, and to attract interest in Tohoku University as well. We are also accepting requests from partner universities to develop customized programs for each university, so please feel free to contact us.”
