The Tohoku University Japanese Program (TUJP) offers intensive Japanese language lessons, themed lectures, cultural workshops, and opportunities to interact with Tohoku University students.
Through classroom learning and collaborative activities, students develop Japanese communication skills while gaining a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and society.
Japanese Language Lessons
TUJP offers intensive Japanese language classes designed to help students develop strong communication skills quickly.
Students learn Japanese through a wide range of interesting topics related to everyday life and gain the linguistic and cultural knowledge needed to navigate Japan and engage in casual conversations with native speakers.
Lessons on Japanese Culture & Society
Through these lessons, students explore various aspects of Japanese culture and society.
In addition to classes, students are expected to complete assignments and participate in group projects outside of class.
Collaborative Learning & Interaction
Opportunities for International Collaborative Learning
These activities provide excellent opportunities to engage with Japanese and international students from diverse backgrounds.
Through collaborative learning, students gain broader perspectives and enhance their communication skills while working together with students from around the world.
TUJP Buddy Program
The TUJP Buddy Program pairs each TUJP student with a local Japanese student, providing a valuable opportunity for cultural exchange throughout the program.
Japanese students share their personal experiences, offer insights into university life, and answer questions or concerns TUJP students may have.
It is also a great opportunity to make new friends and practice Japanese in a supportive and engaging environment.
Credits Awarded
* 1 ECTS is equivalent to 25 hours of work.
* These credits are not directly awarded by Tohoku University. Students must request credits from their home institution using the certificate issued by TUJP.
What is ECTS?
ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) is a standardized credit system used by universities across Europe.
Attendance Requirement for Credits
To successfully complete the program and receive credits, students are required to attend at least 85% of all live sessions.
Since TUJP emphasizes real-time interaction and communication, attendance is an essential part of the learning experience.

TUJP Class Levels Overview
これから日本語学習を始める学生向けのクラス
Introductory class for beginners with no prior knowledge of Japanese.
て形を既習の学生で、ひらがな・カタカナおよび基本的な漢字を用いたごく簡単な日本語を理解し、身近な場面で基本的なやり取りができるレベル
For students who have already learned the -te form and can understand very simple Japanese written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji, and can engage in basic interactions in familiar, everyday situations.
初級の基本的な文法知識があり、動詞の活用（可能形、意向形、受身形、条件形など）を一通り既習で、基本的な日本語を使って身近な内容であれば概ね理解し、対応できるレベル。
For students who have a basic knowledge of elementary-level grammar, have already learned various verb forms including all conjugations (e.g., potential form, volitional form, passive form, conditional form), and can generally understand and respond to familiar topics using basic Japanese.
中級レベルで、日常的な話題についてやや複雑な文章や会話を理解し、自分の考えを簡単に説明できるレベル
For students at the intermediate level who can understand somewhat complex texts and conversations on everyday topics and can explain their own ideas in simple terms.
日常的および社会的な話題について、標準的な日本語を用いた文章や会話を理解し、自分の意見を論理的に述べることができるレベル
For students who can understand texts and conversations in standard Japanese on everyday and social topics and can express their own opinions logically.
クラス分けは、学習進度およびプレースメントテストの結果に基づき、適切なレベルを提案します。
Class placement will be determined based on students’ learning progress and the results of the placement test, and an appropriate level will be recommended.

Certificate of Completion
Previously, certificates of completion were issued in paper format.
From now on, they will be provided as Open Badges (digital certificates).
