Tohoku University STEM Research Internship Program
Introduction
Tohoku University STEM Research Internship Program (T-SRIP) is designed specifically for full-time 3rd-4th year undergraduate (or equivalent) students in STEM fields. T-SRIP offers an opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in some aspects of advanced scientific research projects at Tohoku University’s world-leading laboratories.

Detailed Program Schedule (tentative)
Curriculum

This 6-week program consists of the following 4 parts:
(1) Research activities at the laboratories
(2) Japanese language, culture classes and field trips (optional) organized by the Global Learning CenterOptional plan: Zen meditation, tea ceremony, Japanese flower arrangement, and etc.
(3) Give a poster presentation at a final seminar (held jointly with other exchange programs).
(4)Prepare/submit a research report.Assignments for T-SRIP students:
1) Summary (One page in A4 size, sample template.)
It will be proceedings of the final seminar.Deadline: Late July
2) Poster (One page in A0 size: 1189 x 841 mm or 46.8 x 33.1 in, vertical display)
A material for the final seminar.
Deadline: Early August
3) Research Report (approximately 5 A4-size pages)
Deadline: Mid-AugustAt the end of the program, students will give a poster presentation, a summary for the presentation and a research report on their research activities. Please consult with your supervisors and follow their instructions.
The program includes research activities at the laboratories, lectures, facility visits, presentations, and field trips.

Field Trips: tentative plan
●One-day field trip to Hirashimizu pottery, Yamadera Temple and Basho Memorial Hall in Yamagata.
●One-day field trip to the area of Ishinomaki affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake

Completion and Credits
Participating students are required to take research activities at the laboratories, after which they will give a poster presentations. On completing these requirements, students are eligible for 8.4 ECTS* and Certificate of Completion. These credits are not conferred at Tohoku University. Students who require credits for this program should inquire at their home universities.
*1 ECTS credit is equivalent to 25 hours of workload. ECTS credits used to evaluate the student 210-hour workload required for completion.

Eligibility
Applicants must be enrolled in full-time 3rd-4th year undergraduate (or equivalent) students in STEM fields at one of the listed partner institutions below. Other details about application requirements will be sent to partner institutions by email.
●Partner universities
University of California (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angels, Merced, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and Riverside), University of Washington, The Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, University of York, University College London and University of East Anglia.
■ Number of Enrollments: 25-35 students
Application
To apply for this program, students must be nominated by their home institutions. Prospective students need to fill in the online application form and upload the following documents no later than the deadline below. The link for the online application form will be sent to the partner universities’ international affairs offices separately.
■ The opening of the application: The registration for T-SRIP 2026 will start in Mid-January 2026.
■ Application Deadline: 11:59 a.m.(JST), February 12th, 2025.

Program Cost
All participants are requested to pay the total program expenses of 250,000 JPY that covers all expenses for various activities during the program by specified payment deadlines.
Travel, accommodations, travel insurance, meals, and personal daily expenses are to be paid individually.
Students are advised to have sufficient money for meals and personal expenses. Payment instructions for the program expenses will be sent to the admitted applicants.

Accommodations
Tohoku University will arrange a single room at hotel including breakfast (Checking-in: June 28th; Checking-out: August 8th)
VISA
Those who need a visa to enter Japan should indicate this on their application forms. Tohoku University will provide an invitation letter to admitted students. Passport holders from certain countries do not need a visa to enter Japan for periods of less than 90 days.
Scholarship
JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) scholarship (JPY160,000 for 6 weeks) will be provided to outstanding students who meet the JASSO requirements.

Insurance
Short program participants are required to buy travel insurance in their own country BEFORE coming to Japan. Students will be solely responsible for any accidents that occur while staying in Japan. Their insurance must cover death and medical care expenses not only due to accidental bodily injury but also for sickness.
Participants will be covered by the following student insurance policies as specified by Tohoku University. The cost is included by the program fee.
