Program Description
Discover "Real" Japan from home
Tohoku University Japanese Program (TUJP) Online is designed to improve your Japanese proficiency and deepen your understanding of Japan. The program consists of intensive Japanese lessons with many hands-on activities to practice Japanese. In addition, there are seminars where you can learn about a variety of traditional Japanese cultures, both in theory and actual practice. What you have learned in class will be reinforced with cultural activities planned by Tohoku University students. This program, tailored to meet your needs and interests, will help you discover the REAL Japan from home.

Eligibility
■ Full-time undergraduate students at partner universities of Tohoku University
■ Sufficient English ability
- Equivalent to TOEFL® iBT 70 or PBT 520 recommended.
- Results from other internationally recognized English exam accepted (not required for native speakers).
■ Japanese Language ability
TUJP Online-1: Basic learners who have studied Japanese for less than one year and have knowledge of hiragana, katakana, and verb conjugations (ますform) or higher, or have the equivalent level of JLPT N5-N4.
TUJP Online-2: Pre-intermediate or Intermediate learners with the equivalent level of JLPT N3-N2. The class will be taught in Japanese.
*Students must be enrolled at their home university during this program.
*All classes and instructions are provided in English or Japanese.

Credits Awarded
- On completing the program successfully, students should be eligible to earn 3 ECTS *( TUJP Online-1: 2week programs ) and4 ECTS *( TUJP Online-2: 3week programs ) equivalent.
* 1 ECTS is equivalent to 25 hours of work. These credits are not conferred at Tohoku University, so each participant needs to negotiate with his/her home institution with the certificate we issue.
Fees
TUJP Online-1: 30,000 JPY (approx. 280 USD)
TUJP Online-2: 50,000 JPY (approx. 470 USD) )

All the fees must be paid via our online payment system by the deadline.
Valid Credit Card: VISA, Mastercard, JCB, and AMERICAN EXPRESS.
*Processing charge (TUJP-1: 950JPY, approx.US$9 /TUJP-2: 1,430JPY, approx.US$13) will be added.
* Payment instructions will be sent to those who are accepted.
* Program fee is non-refundable.

Japanese Communication Program
> JAPANESE LANGUAGE CLASSES & CULTURE LESSONS
These classes provide practical training with themes taken from real academic and daily scenarios to improve the students' ability to use Japanese. It aims to confer real-life Japanese that cannot be acquired from textbooks alone. Japanese culture lessons are integrated into the curriculum
> PBL WORKSHOPS with Japanese students
These workshops incorporate problem-based learning and encourage students with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds to work on collaborative projects.

Academic Japanese Program
> JAPANESE LANGUAGE CLASSES & CULTURE LESSONS
Aimed at providing the skills needed to pass the JLPT N2 or N1 exams, these classes will quickly take your Japanese skills to the next level. For those of you who desire to study long-term in Japan, we help to develop your Japanese language proficiency in a short period of time. Japanese culture lessons are integrated into the curriculum.
> SPECIALIZED HUMANITIES CLASSES taught in Japanese
These Tohoku University humanities classes, conducted in relatively easy Japanese, let students develop the language proficiency and basic knowledge needed to pursue study and research at a Japanese university.

Interaction with TU students
In both programs, a Japanese student at Tohoku University will become your “buddy,” and assist your learning during the program.
You can ask for your buddy’s help with Japanese conversation practice and homework assignments anytime.
In addition, TU students will organize workshops on Japanese traditional and/or pop culture, and student life at TU.
How to Apply
For student
Contact your international affairs office to apply. Students must be nominated by their home institutions.
Nominated students are required to fill in the online application form and upload the required documents no later than the deadline below.
*Note that the results of an online Japanese test are used to balance the number of students in the appropriate classes.
For International Office Coordinators
Please select and nominate students from those who are interested in the program, then submit the information of the candidates via our online nomination form. Also, forward the link of the online application form only to the nominated students. Applicants are required to submit the online application form and upload the following supporting documents by the deadline below.

Required documents
- Ⅰ. Transcript from the previous academic year in English
- Ⅱ. Copy of photo ID, such as passport or student ID card (page with applicant’s photo)
- Ⅲ. Personal statement on the reasons for applying (300-400 words):
Use the personal statement sheet and upload as PDF with a file name including your name.
- Ⅳ. Copy of English language ability certificate and scores (optional)
- Ⅴ. Result of online Japanese test:
