Therefore I would like to be a global leader who has the ability to exert my own individuality, as I respect others\u2019 uniqueness; and I would like to create a world where every single person can cherish their own happiness. When I was in elementary school, my dream was to be a florist and run a flower shop to make a living.\r\nIt was because almost all the girls in my school wanted to be either a florist or a baker.\r\nIt may sound weird but what I wanted was to be the same as others.\r\nI assume most of you know about this so-called Japanese mind-set.\r\nI felt comfortable as long as I was similar to others and I did not want to be outstanding or special especially when I was a young student.\r\nAfter I entered high school, my dream shifted to becoming a doctor. Of course you can guess why. \r\nIt was because my friends around me said that they wanted to be doctors.\r\nSo you see, making choices as others usually do was my absolute standard. However, I discovered a totally new perspective when I came here, Tohoku University. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nLuckily, I passed the Admission Office entrance examination and soon I joined a study abroad program in California, called \u201cNyugakumae Kenshu\uff08\u5165\u5b66\u524d\u7814\u4fee\uff09.\u201d During the program, I met an amazing Japanese exchange student from Tohoku University who studied at University of California, Riverside. Actually, it was that student who guided me to join the TGL program. <br>\r\nAt the UCR campus, he was always surrounded by his international friends. His life in California did not look like any typical Japanese student\u2019s life, but he seemed the happiest man in the world to me. <br>\r\nHe told me that he could have been happy staying in Japan as other students did.\r\nHowever, he did not choose that option and took a much more difficult one, going to the United States where no one knew him. He tried to live an absolutely challenging life.\r\nThat was my life-changing moment. <br>\r\nI found his choice much cooler and more adventurous than anything like seeking an ordinary life.\r\nAfter I met him, I started to take whatever option sounded special and different.\r\nThat is why I joined the TGL program. And in the process of the TGL program, I even started to dream of being an international doctor in the future. <br><br>\r\n\r\nLast year, I had an opportunity to do a seven-month research internship at OIST, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology.\r\nEven though OIST is located in Japan, the community there is totally international. \r\nEverything I experienced in OIST was completely new. \r\nCommunicating in the laboratory meetings, collaborating for scientific experiments, and even lunch time with a Canadian pos-doc, were in English.\r\nTo communicate in English all day long was challenging for me. However, I enjoyed life in such an international community a lot. \r\nThis is not only because I liked using English, but I was comfortable with the whole international system. It was logical and fair to everyone.\r\nI finally could imagine how amazing and interesting it would be for me to work in an international environment.\r\nIn the community, I did not have to even hesitate to share my dream to be an international doctor.\r\nI realized that if your environment changes, then the standard you hold will change.\r\nIn other words, \u201cthe environment makes the person\u201d. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nNow, my dream is to contribute to world-leading medical research as a clinical doctor who is working in international settings. <br>\r\nI do know the road I will take is not easy at all and staying in Japan would be much easier for me.\r\nHowever, I am sure that Tohoku University will help me make this dream come true as the TGL program offered me a chance.\r\nThere is a saying that goes like this, \u201cwhen two paths open before you, take the harder one.\u201d I believe in this saying because of my experience in the TGL program. <br><br>\r\n\r\n\r\nWe are all a product of our environment.
