left\">\r\n<p>On December 14 (Thu.) 2017, a seminar titled \"Renting Apartments for Beginners\" was held at the International Exchange Building on Kawauchi Kita Campus. The seminar was aimed at international students who will be leaving their dormitories and renting apartments in Sendai for the first time. It was conducted in English and covered how to look for apartments and things to be careful of when signing the lease.<\/p>\r\n<p>The seminar was held with cooperation from the Tohoku University Co-op housing staff. About 41 international students participated in the seminar and Q&amp;A session.<\/p>\r\n<p>Many of the international students were renting apartments in Japan for the first time. They listened closely to the presenters and actively asked questions about the rental process, from finding an apartment to signing the lease.<\/p>\r\n<p>The International Exchange Support Office plans to hold similar seminars in the future. Students study not only about southern Americans, but also about African- and Native-Americans, and we take field trips to related areas, such as a historic former slave plantation and a Native American reservation and museum.<br \/>\r\nWe also visit other museums and the heart of the city of Charlotte. Students also have a chance to experience general American culture through a number of activities such as attending an American football game, going to restaurants and a number of cultural exchange events with UNCC students and people in Charlotte. Following that project's pattern, the students set out to introduce the beautiful town of Minamisanriku, and its wonderful residents, to the world. They interviewed four people from Minamisanriku about the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the reconstruction efforts, the future of the town, and its attractions. Here in Sendai, there is none bigger or more anticipated than the Aoba Matsuri, a weekend of traditional dancing and street festivities along Jozenjidori. The highlight of the annual festival is the Suzume Odori or 'sparrow dance,' which dates back to the building of Sendai castle in 1603, when stone masons danced like sparrows to entertain feast-goers and their samurai lord, Masamune Date. Tohoku University's team consisted of some 42 students, almost all of them from the International Program for Liberal Arts (IPLA). The ceremony was held at Katahira campus.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nFourteen students received the prestigious Global Hagi Scholarship, which will go towards study abroad programmes at Tohoku University's partner institutions around the world.
