1.The Japanese Government Scholarships
There are three ways to apply for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarships for foreign students.
Applying for the scholarships from abroad:
(1) By recommendation through Japanese embassies and legations abroad.
Please inquire at the Japanese Embassy or consulate general in your country.
(2) By recommendation of the university which accepts foreign students by interuniversity exchange agreements. (The students are requested to arrive in Japan in October.)
Please inquire your current school of enrollment.
Applying for the scholarships in Japan - for those studying at their own expense in Japan.
3) Selection in Japan by recommendation of the university where the SHIHI (those studying at their own expense) foreign students attends.
Please inquire at the faculty/graduate school after enrolling in the university.

2.Other Scholarships
There are other types of scholarships available for SHIHI Students. The notification, selection, and the amount of stipend differ for each scholarship. The application procedures are normally carried out through the university where the student attends.
Please inquire at the faculty/graduate school after enrolling in the university.
In 2008, there were about 200 international students in Tohoku University who received scholarships from Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) and private foundations.
