5.Procedure for entry to Japan

To enter Japan, any foreign national shall at first possess a valid passport issued by the government of his / her country and receive a visa on it corresponding to the purpose of his/her visit (i.e., in case of study in Japan, ‘College Student’ visa) from a Japanese embassy or consulate abroad.

The following documents are needed to receive a ‘College Student’ visa.

  • Copy of certificate of admission from the faculty/graduate school at which the person concerned is going to study or other certificate in lieu thereof
  • Documents showing that the person concerned can defray all the expenses incurred in Japan

If the student is to enter Japan in order to take the examinations, he or she will be issued a tourist visa specifying the purpose of entry as "taking examination."
