1.Curriculum for Regular Students
As indicated in Table 2, the University has 10 Faculties, 16 Graduate Schools which grant relevant degrees to those who have completed their courses of study.
(1)Undergraduate Program
Undergraduate Programs, which consist of Subjects Common across Campus (zengaku-kyoiku kamoku) and Specialty Subjects (senmon-kamoku), continue for 4 years. The exceptions are schools of Medicine and Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy, which offer 6-year undergraduate programs.
A student who has completed the coursework in a given faculty will receive a bachelor's degree (gakushi-go) as indicated in Table 2.
(2) Graduate Program
The Graduate Programs of Tohoku University were established for the purpose of pursuing the highest level of scholarship through education and research in pure and applied sciences and humanities, with the goal of contributing to a higher standard of culture and civilization in society. There are 16 Graduate Schools (kenkyu-ka) roughly corresponding to the Faculty departments.
The names of the Divisions of the Graduate School and their major fields of study are listed in Table 2. The research institutes (kenkyujo) listed in Table 3 are also open to graduate students for research work.
The Graduate School offers a graduate course, which is divided into a two-year course (zenki-katei, or Master Course) and a subsequent three-year course (koki-katei or Doctoral Course). However, the Graduate Schools of Medicine and Dentistry have only the four-year Doctoral course. Graduate students are granted a master's degree (shushi-go) after completing the two-year course and a doctor's degree (hakushi-go) after completing the subsequent three-year course, or the four-year course in the Graduate Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. The requirements for completion of each course include both coursework for the prescribed period of time and the submission of a thesis or dissertation. Candidates for these degrees must pass the final examination on their thesis or dissertation. The titles of the degrees are listed in Table 2.
2.Research Students & Others
A student may be enrolled in the University as a research student who studies specific subjects in an undergraduate faculty, a division in the Graduate School, or a research institute. A research student cannot in principle acquire an academic degree.
However, some research students have been awarded a doctor's degree by submitting a dissertation compiled from the results of their research work. Those not enrolled in the doctoral course may be granted a doctor's degree, if they are judged as equal or superior in scholastic attainments to those who have completed the doctoral course, and if their dissertation is accepted.
3.Japanese courses
(1) Intensive Japanese Language Course
This is a six-month intensive course which aims to provide Research Students and Teacher Training Students funded by the Japanese government with an opportunity to learn Japanese as a preparation for the coming professional education.
(2) Japanese Language Program at Kawauchi for International Students and Scholars
This is a program open to international students and scholars in Tohoku University. It aims to improve students' ability in Japanese and basic academic skills, and to help them adapt to their new living environments.
The classes in the program are held at the Center for International Exchange at Kawauchi Kita campus. At present, the Special Japanese Language Program offers the following courses.
