Inter-University Exchange Project
Tohoku University’s project "Creation of innovative leaders for new Japan–Russia relations" was adopted under the Inter-University Exchange Project in FY2014.
The “Inter-University Exchange Project” was launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in 2011, and it aims to foster human resources capable of being globally active, and to assure the quality of mechanisms for the mutual recognition of credits and grade management through an international framework, by giving financial support to efforts for the formation of collaborative programs with universities in such countries as Asia and US, that conduct study abroad programs for Japanese students and undertakes the strategic acceptance of foreign students.
In fiscal year 2014, in order to support for the formation of collaborative programs with Russian and Indian universities, support is being provided for projects that implement exchange programs with quality assurance between universities in Japan and the two countries.

Summary of Project
The goal of this project is to make use of our deep ties with Russian universities and Russian Academy of Sciences to (1) carry out short term exchange programs in order to increase mutual cultural awareness and knowledge (2) carry out student exchange programs with mutually recognized credit transfers (3) using the high-level research performed by both countries to carry out graduate-level joint education programs. Establish a Russian-Japanese Inter-University Education Board to seek the potential creating double or joint degree programs as well as carry out the planning and operations of exchange programs mentioned in (2) and (3).
Summary of Exchange program
Engaging in (1) Short term exchange programs in order to increase mutual cultural awareness and knowledge, (2) exchange programs with mutually recognized credit transfers, (3) Graduate-level joint education programs with “Moscow State University”, “Novosibirsk State University and Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences”, “Far Eastern Federal University and Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences”.
Global Human Resource on the project
Those who are looking to build bridges between Japan and Russia by undertaking education, research, culture, and industry exchanges, as well as human resources with high-level of skills that will lead to new innovations between Japan and Russia.
Feature on the project
Formulation of a tri-district higher education exchange model comprised of universities and science academies in a Europe/Russia district, a Siberia district, and a Far East district that aims to take advantage of the unique characteristics of both Japan and Russia.
